Dave Portnoy suggests Angel Reese stats are less legitimate than Caitlin Clark (2024)

Dave Portnoy has made it clear where he stands regarding Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese's heated race for the WNBA's Rookie of the Year award. On X, the Barstool Sports founder shared a clip of the final play of the Chicago Sky's 81-67 loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday.

The clip in question showed the Sky running a play with under 20 seconds remaining in the game to get Reese the ball to get her to either score or get to the free-throw line to allow her to get her 16th straight double-double, to push her league record further. At the time, Reese had eight points on 3-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with her 16 rebounds.

Once Reese received the ball, she drove baseline and was greeted by four Liberty defenders before throwing the ball out to a teammate. By the time the Sky had the ball back, too much time had passed for Chicago to run a play, thus snapping Reese's history streak.

On social media, Portnoy couldn't help but comment on the Sky and the rookie's attempt to get her a double-double, despite the fact that Chicago was down 14 and the game essentially was lost.

"Kinda hilarious how Caitlin Clark's stats are all natural and in the due course of the game and the Chicago Sky will lose by 50 and just try to pad Angel Reese's stats," the 47-year-old wrote on X, with 13 crying laughing emojis. Portnoy is referring to how Clark became the first rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double.

In the Indiana Fever's 83-78 win against the Liberty on July 6, Clark grabbed a defensive rebound with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, giving her 10 for the night. Overall, Clark finished with 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds, making league and franchise history in the process.

“Obviously, it’s really cool. I mean my teammates have been finishing the ball really, really at a high rate, my assists numbers is because of them,” the 22-year-old star rookie said after the win, per CNN.

“Honestly, I’m just happy we won. I take a lot of pride of being able to do a lot of different things for this team.” On the other hand, Reese has been making history of her own, recording a double-double in 15 straight games.

During her streak, Reese averaged 15.3 points, 13.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.6 steals, shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from the field. Although her production looks stellar during her streak, one of the main knocks on Reese's game is the fact that she is inefficient in getting her points.

In six of the 15 games, Reese shot under 40 percent from the field, often rebounding her misses from close range. As such, many on social media believe Reese could be padding her stats, as the rookie's effort continues to shine through with her motor being unquestioned.

For Portnoy to back Clark makes sense considering how he is a fan of the Fever rookie. After Clark was fouled hard by Chennedy Carter - Reese's teammate on the Sky - Portnoy quickly noted on social media how much he disapproved of the play. When Clark was snubbed by Team USA in the wake of Cameron Brink's injury, Portnoy again made his thoughts known on the 22-year-old's omission.

With how well both rookies are playing, the race for the Rookie of the Year award has heated up immensely, with legendary college coach Dawn Staley calling Reese the winner. Despite how outsiders see Clark and Reese's rivalry, the two have made it known that any perceived animosity is all fabricated.

"When we go out there and play super hard, compete every single day, it’s not personal,” the Sky rookie said. "I promise you it’s based off our stories and where we’ve come from. We’ve come from so many places that you guys have never seen or would never understand, so just being able to go out there and play with that chip on our shoulder every single night, that’s just what we do, and that’s just who we are."
